This trail is easily followed for its entire length by following the old decommissioned road. At kilometer 1.5 of the trail you will pass a kiosk for the Flower Springs hiking trail.  Continue along the road past the kiosk for good views of Summit Lake and the highway below.  At the end you will have fantastic views of the MacDonald Valley and a vista of the Northern Rocky Mountains. Keep an eye out for wildflowers and various animals as you go through the alpine landscapes.

Length: 12 km round trip

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

  • "Great views!"

This road is great for mountain biking. Be aware though as of July 2018 it is starting to erode enough in a couple of places that you will need to walk your bike for a short distance. It takes about 25 minutes to bike back to Summit Lake campground. It is nice to have the interpretive signs near the communications tower. There are wonderful views of the McDonald Creek are as well as the Alaska Highway corridor. I spotted my first grizzly bear up here 20 years ago when you were able to drive the road.

One tip is that the communications tower is a Northwest Tel facility but I was able to get 1 bar of service for Telus only when standing right beside the tower. I was able to do a safety check in with my family.
